Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

I am using feisty on a Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook E8110 with Intel HDA soundchip.

The alsa driver loads, sound *seems* to work (mixer ...) but I cannot hear anything.

I tried all "model=..." settings listed on http://alsa.opensrc.org/Hda while loading the module with no success.

Any hints?

Will attach more info next few minutes...

-Marc

As far as I can tell, all Lenovo 3000 C200 laptops are also affected by this bug. As reported on http://lenovo.dropshock.com/archives/fixing-sound/ upgrading to a newer alsa version fixes this issue.
If I'm not mistaken this is the relevant alsa bug: https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=2725
(at least http://www.linlap.com/wiki/Lenovo+3000+C200 is pointing there)

Hopefully this fix finds its way in one of the next updates.

Oops, I just found a report specifically about the Lenovo issue (bug 84616). Sorry for the noise.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and is being marked as Won't Fix for this particular version of the kernel. You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .
However, the issue that you reported is one that should be possible to test with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed kernel. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .
If you do decide to test with the development release of Ubuntu please comment on this bug report and include at least the minimal information requested at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Hello, I am running Gutsy beta on Fujitsu Siemens E8110.

I can confirm the described error even on gutsy beta. The internal speakers are not working for me. I tried headphones and got sound. If you need additional information, please let me know.

the same issue with asus u3s notebook. It worked fine after I installed ubuntu 7.10, but after I performed several proposed updates via Update manager - I can hear sounds from external headphones only.

Hi All,

msemenkin: Can you please verify you have the same sound card as the previous reporters. Otherwise please open a new bug report.

Marc and Bug-C: Can you try installing linux-backports-modules and verify this issue still exists? Please report back your results. If the issue still exists the following wiki might be useful: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSoundProblems . Thanks.

Unfortunately I am no export when it comes to Ubuntu, thus i try to explain what i did try. Perhaps you can point me to additional tests that i could try:

- As Leann suggested, I installed the linux-backports-modules. To be safe i restarted Ubuntu but the problem still exists.
- I read about a similar sound problem occuring on Acer laptops that could be fixed by adding "options snd-hda-intel model=fujitsu" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base. Unfortunately this also does not seem to have any effect.

Hardy Heron Alpha2 was recently released. It contains an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha2 release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/alpha-2/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/hardy/alpha2 . Thanks!
