Bug Description

Binary package hint: sata-modules-2.6.10-5-386-di

booting livecd of ubuntu 7.04 gold is giving the following errors:
(initramfs) [ 43.844494] ata6: COMRESET failed (device not ready)
[ 49.467291] ata6.00: failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x101)
[ 84.903737] ata6: port failed to respond ( 30 secs, Status 0x80)
[ 84.903784] ata6: COMRESET failed (device not ready)
[ 90.530561] ata6.00: failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x101)

system then hangs at (initramfs) prompt

This issue is only seen on the E520 when the SATA controller mode is set to (Raid On) with a DVD+RW and booting to a LiveCD, after the system is install the issue is not seen.

System Configs:

1) Failed: E520 with dual optical drives DVD and DVD+RW controller set to (Raid On) will fail booting a LiveCD in the DVD drive.

2) Failed: E520 with single optical drives DVD+RW controller set to (Raid On) will fail booting a LiveCD.

3)Passed: E520 with single optical drives DVD controller set to (Raid On) will booting a LiveCD without any issues.

The Work around for the dual optical config is to turn off the port that the DVD+RW is connected to or set the SATA controller to ATA mode. If a system only has a DVD+RW, the work around is to set the controller to ATA mode, after the install is complete change it back to (Raid On) reboot all is good. The factory default setting for the controller is (Raid On).

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
