Bug Description

I have Feisty installed on my ASUS laptop, model A3500G (or A3000 or A3G, I think). It has a Intel Pentium M 1.6 GHz processor, with frequency going from 600 MHz to 1.6GHz by steps of 200 MHz. My kernel is 2.6.20-15-generic

The cpu fan can run in different speeds, 3 I think. The problem is that when it reaches the highest speed, it never slows down or turn off, it's very annoying.

Steps to reproduce:
- turn on the laptop
- make the temperature go high for the fan to start (e.g.: play xmoto ;-) )
- that's it, the fan is at the maximum speed and won't slow down.

However, I found a way to make it slow down. I suspend my session (by clicking on the "suspend" button when logging off from the K menu) and when I turn the laptop on again, the fan is at a normal speed and it looks like it won't go crazy again. The drawback is that after resuming there are always two processes consuming about 25% of cpu power, kacpid and kacpi_notify. Here are the lines concerning those processes copied from "top":
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
   31 root 11 -5 0 0 0 S 19.4 0.0 6:41.12 kacpid
   32 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 6.6 0.0 2:13.26 kacpi_notify

Thank you and sorry because I really don't know to which package this bug should be assigned... The kernel maybe ?

Similar thing on Dell Inspiron 9300. After it gets hot enough it stays at full speed.
If I select restart from the Gnome menu, it restarts, but fan stays at the same speed even after reboot.
I have to shut down, then press the on button to start the computer again to get the fan speed down.

Even the upgrade to 2.6.20-16.31 did not make any difference.
The computer as I see it is unusable when there is people around. It sounds like a helicopter ready for take-off.

2.6.20-15 does work... The fan runs on low speed all the time, and the temperature never get as high as it does before the fan starts on 2.6.20-16....
On 2.6.20-16 I have seen temperatures down to 25degr.C with the fan still running full speed.

The problem exists for linux 2.6.15-29 (Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS) on Asus Laptop A3870G (alias A3G, alias...) too.
Very annoying.

Same problem with an ASUS L3000D with AMD Athlon CPU.
The fan runs at maximum speed with the 2.6.22 kernel only, it works fine with 2.6.20

My problem disappeared when changing the graphics-driver.

I have an ati mobility radeon 9700 and often I install updates, without rebooting for multiple days - sometimes weeks.
And since I didn't update the graphics driver with synaptic/apt-get, I wasn't sure about that being the real source of problems.
Unfortunately, I made some mistakes by using the radeon-driver, so I excluded the graphics driver from the list of possible sources.

I'm now using the fglrx-driver, and the fan slows down nice again.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

This bug report is being closed because we received no response to the previous request for information. Please reopen this if it is still an issue in the actively developed pre-release of Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty . To reopen the bug report simply change the Status of the "linux" task back to "New".
