Bug Description

I can't hear any sound on Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. I never faced this problem with either edgy or opensuse 10.2. I've just installed Ubuntu AMD64 desktop edition of Feisty.

I've already submitted the hardware details at hwdb. refer this link to the same post in forum http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=416234

The very first install of Feisty final release didn't work but later
on i reinstalled then it worked without any hitch. This sounds weird
but I dont know the exact reason for this.

I just figured out a procedure to make the sound work again in my hp laptop. Usually, I use the laptop connected to the power source. If I shut down, disconnect the power and boot using the battery, Feisty comes up with sound again. I also verified that booting Vista (on my dual boot laptop) kills the sound after I reboot with Linux. Apparently, the bug does have something to do with ACPI.

I am also experiencing this problem with a HP Pavilion dv2120ca. I dual boot Windows XP and Ubuntu 7.04 x64. Sound does not work on first boot after using Windows. I have to reboot again (Into Ubuntu) without the power cable for the sound to come back. Sound DOES work on successive reboots (with the power cable), as long as I do not boot into Windows, in which case I have to follow the same procedure to get sound back.

I had this problem too. The problem was that the alsa mixer volume settings was sometimes set to zero on reboot. I don't see the connection between running on battery/using the power cord and the volume being set to zero on reboot. But there must be some weird connection.

Amit Shah (am1tshah) wrote : Suspend / Resume loses sound

On my ThinkPad T60, I see a similar behaviour: on suspend / resume, there's no sound (hibernate). When I suspend-to-ram after resume, the sound comes back on again.

It doesn't produce sound in different kernels either once it goes.

I have this sound issue on my HP Pavilion DV2007EA (with AMD turion & nVidia+conexant etc.).. Soundproblem dissappeared after kernel upgrade on Feisty (I'm using now 2.6.20-16-generic kernel), and everything was working great, BUT now sound is gone again. I have to start computer with batterypower only to get sound working. I can plug charger in right after hearing sound in login screen and sound is working.

One other thing is allso, that after this sound issue came back, multimediakeys at latop aren't working anymore. Or actually those are working, I can see how volume level changes in "volume screen which pops up" and when pressing mute it shows mute on that "screen". Only problem is that volume isn't changing actually at all, and mute isn't going on or off (doesn't chance in up panel eather).

PS. Sorry for bad English and low technical details, I just was thinking that it might be good idea to post these things in here.

Hi guys. I have a compaq presario c571nr which uses the snd-hda-intel driver with a Conexant 5045 (CX20549 venice) codec. I followed the directions on this wiki page to install alsa version 1.0.14:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto

And then I found putting the following in at the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base does wonders:

options snd-hda-intel model=laptop

Try that and reboot. I use one more option with mine (position_fix=1) which gets sound recording working with recordmydesktop.

Microphone still seems to have a lot of issues however.

I have the exact same issues as described above, also i find it very sad that this big has been around for over a year without a decent fix. Sound stops/starts working seemingly randomly but has todo with AC/Battery and/or ACPI, very annoying problem and a lot of users are struggling with this. I have no problems with sound when running the old ubuntu 6.x but 7.x gives me the randomness described by other, i dont fancy having to use tricks (remove batter or boot without ac) to fix sound. It seems we're left in the cold, asla dev. and ubuntu dev isnt doing anything, this bug hasnt even got priority. I hope one day this big will be fixed, until then i will keep using FreeBSD ony my v3010au notebook.

HP/Compaq v3010au (v3000 series)
Ubuntu 7.04 and Ubuntu 7.10 both give sound problems
Ubuntu 6.04 is perfectly fine.

I found a very strange thing about this.
My laptop is HP/Compaq V3182. During the first 10 days, I cannot heard any sound in Ubuntu, but from one day on (I can't remember the date), the sound comes out.
And not until the feeling of exciting gone, 3 days later, someday evening, when I open my laptop and enter Ubuntu as usual, I lost my sound again.
These days, things changed again, when I use a headphone, I can hear the sound, but I cannot heard that without headphone.
Aha, I saw that this issue happens not only on my HP V3000 series laptop.
