linux-image-2.6.20-14-386 doesn't boot

After updating to todays version of feisty with kernel 2.6.20-14-386, the boot process hangs at the very beginning.
I got it to display something like "[61.112321] ata1.00: Can't set xfermode..."

For what it's worth, 2.6.20-15-386 shows exactly the same behaviour,
it hangs as soon as the "ubuntu"-splash screen is displayed. I have not
been able to convince it to display any boot messages.

2.6.20-13-386 is the last kernel that boots on my machine, some specs:

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package.
