Bug Description

Binary package hint: kvm

bd@shion:~$ sudo apt-get install kvm
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kvm: Depends: kvm-api-9 but it is not installable

There are no packages with Provides: kvm-api-9 either in feisty.
E: Broken packages

seems like it is in Universe so MOTU should handle it

Also, confirmed

I have kvm 0.16 installed. kvm-api-9 dependency is added in kvm 0.18. kvm 0.16 cannot be updated and it's greyed out in update manager,

The kvm debian/changelog implies that the kernel package should be updated, so I’m adding linux-source-2.6.20.

 * Make package depend on kvm-api-X, so the kernel can provide correct API
and we make sure things don't get skewed.

AFAICS it should provide "kvm-api-9"?!

How can importance be undecided? This is a confirmed bug, preventing a "headline feature", this should be a showstopper, or removed as a major feature of Feisty...

I have the same problem, updated to the last kernel and can still not install kvm. This is really bad. Is there an ETA for when this will be fixed?

I agree with LosD. In www.ubuntu.com there's a banner saying: "Ubuntu 7.04 Beta. Simple networking, easy codecs and virtualization! Help test". This bug's importance shouldn't be undecided. It's a feisty major feature.

hi,

i am afraid the kvm virtualisation still not available since the kvm package depends on kvm-api-9, and it is not available in any of the repositories.

guys, the bitching doesn't help. If anything, people are less inclined to look at, due to all the useful information being hidden by all the bitching.

It's confirmed. now wait. and help out.

This stuff is all free, and mostly volunteer-based, you know...

I'm not sure if it really is bitching, the point is that the major deep freeze is closing, and if it wasn't fixed, then one of the goals for Feisty would be gone.

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure that the reason for it not being changed to a show stopper, was that the ones to decide on release blockers probably are working normal hours, and it wasn't confirmed until friday evening...

Doesn’t the epoch increment make it really hard to resync with Debian now for future releases?

Sarah, this comment is patronising and unhelpful. Most of the comments
have been genuine attempts to report and verify the existence of the
bug, which was claimed prematurely to be fixed. The reason for the
alarm should be obvious: the imminent release, for which
virtualisation is an important goal. Please try to be more respectful.

I believe nobody is saying anything harmfull, and we all know that this is free and volunteer-based. What I've been trying to say is something like "This is a bug, and due to the fact that kernel freeze date was scheduled to April 5th (!), this is an important bug". I think it isn't fixed. The bug showed up when I wanted to install kvm-18, not kvm-16, but kvm-18 is not available any more.

Question: is a new kernel release still possible? If not, the kvm package has to be changed before release to allow installation.

An incompatibility is less severe than not being able to install it at all.

It HAS been fixed, not by kernel upgrade, but by kvm downgrade (from 18 to 16).
