using a 2gb usb memorty stick, the device is recognized by the underlaying system, but isn't mounted on the desktop. (note, works on windows xp sp2)

udevmonitor -e > log.txt 2>&1 ( command started, the usb device was plugged in, after several seconds, it was plugged out)

similar thing happens when using a cellular phone as a mass storage device.

Not a udev bug, these events are received from the kernel.

This could be a faulty USB device

1. what further information can i provide?
2. the device works under windows xp, and it is a totaly generic thumb drive, without a manufactur designtion.
3. my nokia n73 isn't recognized as a mass storage device when this mode is selected. if i recall correctly, it used to work at some point in the past
(not useful, i know).

I have a similar problem, since I upgraded to Feisty Beta my NTFS partition of my USB external HD doesn't automount (I have to do it manually) while the FAT32 partition is automounted with no problem. Also my external USB DVD-Writer doesn't allow me to format DVD-RW disk cause K3b has no permission for unmounting before erasing (it says it needs to be run as root). As mangar said:

Similar problem here with Kubuntu Feisty

I have a USB external HD with two partitions: 1) ext3 and 2) used to be FAT32 and now is NTFS.

Before converting to NTFS, both partitions were recognized and automatically mounted. Just after converting the second partition to NTFS, both are detected when plug-in but only ext3 partition is automatically mounted. NTFS partitions can be manually mounted without further problems (reading and writing are ok for any user)

Also, it works perfectly under XP (both partitions are recognized and work without problems, using the driver for extfs in Windows)

after reading this

I installed ubuntu-desktop and BOTH partitions are now correctly mounted.

I guess this problem is specific to Kubuntu (Feisty?)

the following solution worked for me:

I fixed my problem by choosing looking at the properties of the drive and unchecking "mount as user"
