I have to pass i8042.nomux to the kernel at boot time in order to have my synaptic touchpad working properly. The computer is a Fujitsu-Simens Lifebook P7010 running an up-to-date Edgy Eft. The symptoms are exactly as reported here in bug 21558: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.15/+bug/21558
