USB stops working on Toshiba m45-s165

During normal use all USB ports on machine stop responding. There are no messages in dmesg. Removing devices and reattaching has no effect, and does not show up in dmesg. Happens randomly, as far as I can tell, on every instance of Ubuntu. The only fix I can find is to reboot, but I'm not a guru.

Could you please try testing with Edgy or Feisty? Also, which *buntu was this in?

It was in Edgy and the machine is still running Edgy, kept up to date. I
haven't been using USB with it since it sits in a corner running as a server
at the moment, but when I get some spare time I'll give it a couple of days
of run time with some USB stuff.

Hello,
I have the same problem on Toshiba m45 s165.
All USB ports stop responding, before that USB ports works in 1.1 mode, not 2.0(2.0 works in Windows).

Some days ago, I've been using Dapper, and get the same.

I notice that the problem occurs after instaling fglrx.
The USB works some minutes, then crashes...

My Toshiba Sattelite Pro L100 has this issue with Ubuntu Feisty Fawn and am going to downgrade to Edgy Eft which did not have this USB problem.

I originally had that problem on Dapper, and in Edgy. I think the very
latest updates on Edgy fixed it, but I can't verify that it works or not in
Feisty as I use that laptop as a server now. It just sits in a corner, and
I haven't had the time to test with it. Maybe during vacation. Please,
submit a bug report against Feisty for your hardware, though. It probably
varies from my laptop, and it gives other people a chance to fix the problem
for later users. Thanks!

I downgraded Ubuntu to Edgy on my Toshiba but still the bug persisted, It seems that the original version I used: Dapper, then online upgrade to Edgy did not cause USB Problems, it seems a fresh install of Edgy and Feisty makes the bug appear.
I have no time for USB bugs and waiting for solutions, so for now I am running Sidux on my laptop.

I'm using Linux Mint based on Ubuntu Festy 7.04 on Notebook HP zv5332 (series zv 5200). I have 2 external hd.
Since 1 month ago i used Ubuntu Edgy.
The problem is always the same: after a random time usb ports stop working.

I observed usb stop working specially when i copy a lot of files from a usb-hd to the other. Hard work may be a possible cause of this problem.

My hd, and some other perpherals, are connected to an hub.
I've tryed to change the hub with one similar but with alimentation. I thought usb port stop because energy request was to high, but problem persist.

This problem, HIMO, is very important. My hd risked to be seriously damaged. I rescued it running a small utility on the "windows side" of my notebook.
I hobe can be fixed as soon as possible.

My log files can help?

I'm getting the same problem as Camilla on a Toshiba Satellite Pro A100 with Feisty fawn 7.04.
USB support starts well but after a random time (2 - 30 minutes) all USB-devices are disconnected. Since I usually only use a USB mouse, my problem is not so severe as Camilla's. I can always continue working using my touchpad.

I looked in my dmesg logging and found:

This brought me to bug #84762 on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/84762.
Not that is provides a solution, but these bugs look related.

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task. The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. After extensive testing using the LiveCD version of Intrepid Ibex Alpha5 I can confirm, in my situation, that the USB bug seems to be resolved. I've been running my toshiba m45-s165 for about 4 days now using an WD external USB drive, USB optical mouse and various USB memory card readers and have no experienced any hiccups. All devices function normally without interruption, and at their expected speeds. One thing I have noticed, though, is that network-manager no longer has an option for 64-bit WEP encryption password entry in the wifi login screen. I realize it's outdated and very insecure, and I'm not sure if this was intentionally phased out, butit is an annoyance. Also, i switched my router to 128-bit WEP key but it still refuses to log on, constantly throwing me back to the wifi login window, only with "WEP 40/128-bit hexidecimal" chosen instead of the regular 128-bit that i had selected before. I realize this may be a new feature, or a seperate bug, but I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone.

To sum up, the bug for all USB ports ceasing to function on the toshiba m45-s165 seems to have been resolved with linux-image-2.6.27-*, as far as I can tell. A big thanks to everyone involved. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

I've been running on Intrepid Ibex 8.10 with kernel linux-2.6.27-7-generic since it's release, and this bug is still an issue. USB seems to stop working after a while of usage.
