Bug Description

With linux-image-386 2.6.15-1, I can see the below message at boot time. I have M5451 PCI AC-link Controller Audio Device and M5457 AC'97 Modem Controller. (Product : VPR Matrix 220a)
After boot, sound is OK except PCM volume always goes back under mid-level and I can't test modem at this point. But, guess that either one may not work properly according to these message. (small thing, but annoying to see on boot for everyday use.)

[17179600.844000] AC'97 1 does not respond - RESET
[17179600.844000] AC'97 1 access is not valid [0xffffffff], removing mixer.
[17179600.844000] ali mixer 1 creating error.
[17179600.912000] ali15x3_smbus 0000:00:11.0: ALI15X3_smb region uninitialized - upgrade BIOS or use force_addr=0xaddr
[17179600.912000] ali15x3_smbus 0000:00:11.0: ALI15X3 not detected, module not inserted.

I notice in your dmesg there is an error relating to the ali15x3 i2c driver that suggests that there is a problem with your BIOS. It suggestes that you upgrade it.

I haven't looked at the sound driver, but it's possible that it uses i2c to communication, and that the i2c failure is the real problem.

Have you checked for updates to your BIOS?

Have you been able to get this working with any past kernel?

My problem is, upgrading bios seems not feasible due to seller. Sound is OK in spite of the message. Noticeable error is the cdrom problem as mentioned on bz #21731. And, I'm not sure that is related to this. So I added the output of lsmod. If more info required, please instruct me.

I see this error from 2.6.15-1, it was OK with 2.6.12. That's why I did report this with specific kernel version.

If all you are seeing is a message, and nothing is broken, then there's not really much to do :)

I would suggest checking for an upgrade to your bios. Even if the motherboard is some off-the-shelf home-built model, you can get bios upgrades.
