I get the same problem on my Sony Vaio VGN-S460 with kernel linux-image-2.6.15-23-386 version 2.6.15-23.35. On shutdown, the last message is "Will now halt" and it doesn't power off.

This must be a regression since it worked fine a while ago - somewhere around Beta 1/2 this started.

My Sony Vaio VGN-S4HP has the same problem that poweroff does not really turn off the power. It worked in Breezy so this is a regression.

This also affects hibernation on my Sony Vaio - it never powers off. I left it for about 20 minutes after initiating hibernation - it had the screen off and seemed to stop any activity but was still on. I powered it off manually then, and on booting again it appeared to resume correctly from hibernation.

Hello,

I have the same problem with Dapper LTS in my Toshiba Tecra8100: Last message: Will now halt OK and then I have to manually switch off power. Something similar happens with hibernatination: screen goes blank, some disk activity, but an external WD usb disk remains on until I press the power switch. However, it seems to work: the system apparently boots from saved information. Upgraded from Breezy where everything worked fine.

My PC cycles through the regular shutdown procedure then shows "Will No Halt". Next, I hear a click inside the box; however, there are still power to the Fans, CDROMS.

I have tried small Linux Distro called (Damn Small Linux) just to confirm that the problem is not from my box. With this distro my PC shuts down OK.

I am running a Pentium 4 on a Gigabyte 915G motherboard (GA 81915G Duo). Intel 915G Express Chipset.

I tried a kernel parameter (acpi=force), mo help.

Laptop powers down and reboots.

3) Click logout > shutdown

Laptop goes through shutdown scripts, then changes screen to background color of uspash, and does not power down.

This might be related to the ipw2200 driver: I also see some messages mentionning it during failed shutdowns (like: timeout while sending CARD_DISABLE or sthing like that).

Morgan Collett (morgan) wrote :

I do use the ipw2200 driver on my laptop.

If I remove "quiet splash" from my boot options, when I (try to) shutdown I see "ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:06:0b.0 disabled" as the last line below the "Will now halt" line. Device 0000:06:0b.0 is the Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG (rev 05).

If I "sudo rmmod ipw2200" I see the same "ACPI: PCI interrupt... disabled" line, although it does remove the module from lsmod. If I then "sudo modprobe ipw2200" I see (among other things) "Warning: PCI driver ipw2200 has a struct device_driver shutdown method, please update!"

So yes, perhaps this is realted to the ipw2200 driver.

Does anybody NOT have ipw2200 who is getting this bug?

Revision history for this message
Oliver Brakmann (obrakmann) wrote :

Yup, I'm not using the ipw2200, so I guess this is a red herring. That being said, other distributions turn of my computer (a desktop with a ECS K7S5A mainboard) just fine (for instance. the grml live cd), so I think collecting all the hardware info won't really help, either. If I knew how to build my own kernel from the Ubuntu source package, I'd try that and fiddle with the power management options, but I don't (yet).

If you have the same kind of computer, just write this in a terminal window:

sudo gedit /etc/default/halt

enter your password (nothing will be shown, not even *, but it's still being written)

In the gedit window, add "rmmod snd_hda_intel" without the "" to the end of the last row.

Save.

I'm running Lucid beta.

I was pleasantly surprised to find Lucid closed down normally after two years of forced close-downs, although I did get a crash message about an "unkillable shutdown applet" (if I recall correctly).

However, after a few days of normal shutdowns, I received some new updates and after that the computer stalls again at the exit screen.

Hope the above information helps.

I am running kernel 2.6.32-21-generic and I still have the issue. My laptop close down but the screen with progressing bar remains.
Happening on my old old old laptop acer aspire 1680 since I updated to Ubuntu Jaunty.
