Bug Description

Flight 6: I tested both live and install versions. The result is the same - kernel panic while booting. I took a picture, but don't know how to attach it, so I will type it down.

I am not sure, but is it possible that mmcfg is related to multimedia? If so, while installing Breeze on same machine I had to disable sound in BIOS and blacklist snd_hda_init. Thought it might help knowing this.

I managed to overcome the kernel panic problem in Dapper Beta using noacpi along with acpi=off option, but it freezes now at mounting root file system.

I got further. It turned out that if I pass pci=nommconf to boot options it works. Len Brown (http://acpi.sourceforge.net/) helped me with that.

I compiled 2.6.16.11 kernel with no patches and it boots. This is my first kernel build and I'm sure it isn't well tuned, but at least it doesn't panic.

I'm ready to do further tests if someone leads me.

I would like to add several info as I have allmost same problems:

My hardware:
Notebook HP PAvilion Dv 5000 series
- AMD Turion 64 bit processor
- ATI X200 graphichal card

Using Dapper 6.06 beta und several daily builds (from 10th to 20th of May) all result in same problem.

After booting (install and live CD for AMD64 platforms), the system hangs on line:
<0> Kernel panic - not syncing: Attemped to kill init!

I tried severel other boot options (vga=771, noapic nolapic, expert and server mode, all results in same crash)

- My memory (RAM) in ok, it has been checked several times
- Notebook is brand new

What might be interesting is:
- when trying to install other distribution, i got next results:
- Gentoo (AMD 64) gives me same probles (kernel panic at startuap. also tries several options)
- Debian (AMD 64) netinstall daily build worked for me. It is using kernel 2.6.15-1-amd64-generic and 2.6.16-1-amd64-generic and it works.
- Knoppix (live CD) worked ( based on Debian build)
- Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy (AMD 64) - installation went well and trough, but graphical interface didn't work. Even the text console (ctrl+alt+F1,F2...) It gave fuzzy screen.

I read some similar bug reports and forum post but didnt find solution on this issues. But I admit it is a tricky connection (AMD 64, ATI and Linux)

I have exactly the same problem as Teo, and the pci=nommconf fix works for me too. (Thanks!)

I'm running an up-to-date Dapper (as of June 22, 2006) on a custom-built desktop pc with an Intel 64bit Pentium 4 CPU.
If I replace the 2.6.15-25 kernel with 2.6.15-10 the boot-time kernel panic goes away. All newer kernels listed by grub fail.

Here's my hardware spec (partly in Norwegian--sorry, but should be understandable):

I am using a Tyan Thunder s2895 MOBO. I can use Feisty 64-bit, and Gutsy 32-bit just fine, however Gutsy 64-bit does a Kernel panic at boot. So the problem is in the 64-bit code base of the newer kernels. I have tried all the way up to 2.6.23.8.

did you performed an Upgrade? If so try using 2.6.22-15 version of the
kernel. The default boot still stays the same as before upgrade (2.6.22-14).
This will solve problem if you are using less the 4GB. With 4 GB or more .
then the possibility is with device drivers for some of your hard ware.
