Bug Description
Booting an HP nx6110 hangs when hal starts. strace reveals that it makes an
ioctl on the network device to check the mii status (presumably to look for link
beat). At this point, the machine freezes solid. The network card is using the
b44 driver, pci id 14e4:170c with subdevice 103c:099c. This claims to be a
Broadcom BCM4401-B0 device. I'll test with stock 2.6.11 later on to confirm that
it's not an Ubuntu issue.

Workaround patch
This avoids the crash, though I'm not sure if it's the correct fix.
