Dell Inspiron 7567 Freezes/Hangs Randomly

Hi,

I am running ubuntu 20.04 LTS on my laptop and have had this issue of the computer freezing ever since I installed this OS. When this occurs, I lose all control of my laptop, and nothing but a hard reset will fix the problem.

I believe that this is related to the cstate issue that is most common in the intelbay trail processors (I've seen many forums discussing the same issue). This is because when I pass in the grub-boot-parameter GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash intel_idle.max_cstate=3, this issue never occurs. However, the issue has come up when I set max_cstate=5; so the issue is caused when the processor enters a cstate between 4 and 5.

The downside of this whole grub boot parameter workaround is that the degradation of battery life is heavy reduced(it does not last for 1/4th the usual time).

My processor is Intel Core i7-7700HQ @ 3.80GHz

Update:

This is not caused by the state. The problem reoccurred even when I had set the max_cstate to 1.

I am trying to disable pstate to see if this fixes the issue.

Update:

It still crashes even if pstate is disabled. Now I do not know what is going on anymore. This issue never happens in windows. So it definitely is not a hardware issue. When music is played when this happens the music loops to the last few seconds endlessly until I hold the power button.
