Have you found a workaround for getting the touchpad to function?

Installing Ubuntu 20.04 LTS does solve the trackpad issue together with the GPU driver and audio. Unfortunately for compatibility reasons I have to use 18.04 so I guess I'm stuck with a mouse for now.

I am in the same situation as you, since I also need to be on 18.04 for now.

I am having trouble with the display driver as well. My model is equipped with an NVIDIA T500 (same as yours), but installing any NVIDIA display driver higher than version 390 fails and drops be in tty mode.
Have you had success with using display drivers other than nomodeset?

Unfortunately I got no GPU driver working other than using nomodeset. First I tried all different versions offered by the software and updates 'additional drivers' tab. And I tried a selection of older drivers from the NVIDIA PPA, I think I did not even get 390 to work. Each time I had to purge the driver in tty to get back on the system.
Did you get the audio working by any chance? I tried different fixes, for example:
https://www.linuxuprising.com/2018/06/fix-no-sound-dummy-output-issue-in.html
But it still only gives dummy output.

I haven't had any success with audio either, I even tried SOF drivers.

Everything looks to be working on 20.04, so perhaps it is possible to backport some changes or identify driver changes between 18.04 and 20.04.
However, I don't think I'll spend much more time on this.

Backporting sounds like too much effort for now indeed. At least it is good to know that I'm not the only one experiencing these issues.
