You may be able to determine why the system is freezing by manually editing the kernel command line in GRUB and removing the "quiet splash" part of the command line. Then boot with this modified command line. This will make the Linux kernel print debugging information to your screen - this will tell you the last successful step of the boot process, and it may give you a kernel panic message, which contains a wealth of debugging data, and may even give you the solution to the problem.
