Bug Description

I install the drivers on my Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop with an Nvidia 8600m GT, and when I reboot, the screen obviously is not working. Its a gray screen, but after about 5 minutes, a vertical black bar appears about midscreen, and everything else goes white. I do however hear sounds, so Ubuntu is indeed running. This is with Hardy Heron (8.04)
Once I uninstalled the driver again, I was able to boot and see everything successfully.

Dear jdban,

I am having the same problem with the Nvidia Driver. I also have a Dell Laptop (Vostro 1500) with Nvidia 8600m GT. When I try to enable the restricted driver, I get a blank screen with some lines and a wide bar in the middle. Obviously the same issue here.

I tried working around the Hardware Drivers application with EnvyNg but it it doesn't appear in the applications/system tools window.

I've about done everything to figure out the problem

Yeah, I pretty much gave up on that months ago.
I don't know why nobody is trying to fix it, maybe since its just the 8600m
GT or something.
I've just been using the older driver that works without glitches, even
though its not a very good driver.

No I'm quite sure it isn't some bug with the 8600m gt cause a friend of mine
has almost the same config with the same nvidia card and it works on his
laptop. So really confusing

do the effects work with the old driver? haven't tried that yet i guess

I experienced a similar problem: I tried to install the nVidia drivers on Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid. When I rebooted the system, I got a black screen. What I found was that the drivers installed correctly but the xorg.conf configuration file wasn't updated. Apparently the black screen results from incompatible resolution or lack of proper configuration. Once I updated the conf file using recommendations found in the forums it worked fine.

Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.
