Bug Description
On hardy alpha 4, this bug is quite reproducible - it occurs every time I try this after reboot, and often if I try subsequently.
1. Try to enable desktop effects in System / Prefs / Appearance.
2. On my system, it currently fails because the fglrx (8.45.4) driver apparently does not support AIGLX on xserver 1.4. (There's another bug report for this.)
3. Afterwards, however, my CPU usage stays indefinitely near 100%.
top shows glxinfo (~35% CPU) and xorg (~65%) to be the culprits.
Killing glxinfo fixes the problem.
Version information:
kernel: 2.6.24.5-generic
xorg: 1:7.3+10ubuntu4
libgl1-mesa-glx: 7.0.2-4ubuntu2
compiz: 1:0.6.99+
fglrx: 8.45.4 (Catalyst 8-1)

Is it linux-restricte d-modules though? I installed Catalyst 8-1 directly instead of using the restricted modules manager.
