Hi Rafael
Could you please try to be a little more specific, what do you mean when say "i get nothing"?, are you getting just a black screen for instance?, does it stay in X?.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Do you have "desktop effects" activated? if so, when disable does the same happens?. Could you please attach your Xorg log.

No I don't have "desktop effects" activated.

And if I active then, the effects work. But I still cannot access the tty's.

My procedures:

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.orig
restart X (Press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace)

The X started properly and the <crtl>+<alt>+<fn> worked fine.

But when I did:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

and configured my video driver to nvida the <crtl>+<alt>+<fn> stopped to work.

Hi Rafael
Sorry about the delay in the response. I'm associating the report to linux-restricted-modules package, since it provide the nvidia propietary driver which seems to cause this issue. Could you provide the syslog and/or the dmesg output, and the output of the following command:

user@machine:~$ dpkg -l|egrep "nvidia|linux-restricted"|awk '{print $2,$3}'

Hi same issue here, I have a nvidia card (GeForce FX 5200)

I reboot my machine and when kernel finishes loading I am at GDM, but then I try to go to a tty with <ctrl>+<alt>+<fn> and I get to a blank screen and no response to anything, the only thing I can do there is go back to X

How can I help solving this bug??

It seems like turning off the vga=XXX in the kernel line in menu.lst fixes the problem...

when i press ctrl+alt+F** i get only blank screens (out of range)- this is not related to the vga=xxx option because i don't have this option in grubs menu.list
