You can open a terminal window and run the "fglrxinfo" command. If you get this:
display: :0.0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 OpenGL version string: 2.0.6958 Release
then your 3D acceleration is working. If the OpenGL vendor string says something about Mesa, then your acceleration isn't working.
