Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Is this still an issue with the latest version of the kernel in Gutsy? Thanks in advance.

Sorry.
I should have followed this before.
With the new ubuntu restricted modules installed (they weren't available before) wifi works fine.
it seems there will be a need of some dependent of the kernel on this package.

There is in fact a dependency of linux-generic (with lrm) and linux-image-generic (no lrm) on linux-ubuntu-modules. The meta packages handle bringing all this together.
