Sorry.
I should have followed this before.
With the new ubuntu restricted modules installed (they weren't available before) wifi works fine.
it seems there will be a need of some dependent of the kernel on this package.

There is in fact a dependency of linux-generic (with lrm) and linux-image-generic (no lrm) on linux-ubuntu-modules. The meta packages handle bringing all this together.
