Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx

I have a NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 200

Testing feisty, yesterday an upgrade of nvidia-glx from 1.0.9631 to 1.0.9755 break my 3D capability.

Here is the error message in Xorg.0.log :
--------
(II) NVIDIA dlloader X Driver 1.0-9755 Mon Feb 26 23:23:13 PST 2007
(II) NVIDIA Unified Driver for all Supported NVIDIA GPUs
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0

(WW) NVIDIA(0): more information. The 1.0-9755 NVIDIA driver will ignore
(WW) NVIDIA(0): this GPU. Continuing probe...
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found
--------

I then had no choice but switch to nvidia-glx-legacy (1.0.7184). Now I can load Xorg and see the desktop. Xorg.0.log shows :
--------
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1280x1024"
(II) Loading extension NV-GLX
(II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA 3D Acceleration Architecture Initialized
(II) NVIDIA(0): Using the NVIDIA 2D acceleration architecture

(**) Option "dpms"
(**) NVIDIA(0): DPMS enabled
(II) Loading extension NV-CONTROL
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" is not used
--------

but, no 3D task can be performed. When I try glxgears for example, I can see the following error message :
--------
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual
--------

It is a bit sad because my GPU was able to run compiz/beryl right after installing the nvidia drivers from Ubuntu feisty repository, and now I cannot do it anymore.

(Suggestion : A package for NVIDIA 1.0-96xx Legacy drivers in Ubuntu repositories.)

This breaks for me too, same error, nvidia geforce 2 go. The 96xx legacy drivers are also not in the repository, and the nvidia drivers are required for this laptop to work with any amount of stability.

sudo apt-get remove nvidia-kernel-common

answer yes - this will remove the entire restricted modules package and associated dependencies

cd /directory/where/the/downloaded/nvidia/installer9631/is

sudo sh NVIDIA-9631-installer

answer to to looking for a precompiled version

answer no to rewritting your xorg.conf

after its finished,

sudo pico /etc/X11/xorg.conf

change "nv" to "nvidia"

reboot

welcome back to X

Same problem.
I have downgrade my kernel version and use dpkg to install old nvidia-glx package and it works fine.

I have tried both nvidia-glx-new and nvidia-glx - both give the same result, the x server will not start. I get the blinking cursor and have to copy back the old xorg.conf to continue. After installing the module, I am enabling with
sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals
I have also tried
sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --allow-glx-with-composite --depth=24

nvidia-xconfig seems to generate a good xorg.conf with my video card (Nvidia Quadro FX2500M, a G71 series card) recognised, correct screen dimensions of 1920x1200.
(the depth option is there because because one time, nvidia-xconfig seemed to set me up with a 16bit default visual).

I'm running kubuntu feisty beta, on a Dell Precision M90 laptop. The kernel is 2.6.20-14.

In the log, I see
