Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx

the (alternate) installer correctly installed linux-generic.

I have tried to install nvidia-glx which pulls in linux-386. This kernel does not boot on this machine

now during gathering information for this bugreport i realised that "linux-generic" isn´t installed

uname --all
Linux ub 2.6.20-8-generic

shouldn´t thes dependcies also be installed?

The following NEW packages will be automatically installed:
  linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-8-generic linux-restricted-modules-generic nvidia-kernel-common

ok it seems i figured it out

the installer installed a generic kernel without some dependcies (without linux-generic) i guess that´s because of space limitation on CD´s?

if that´s the reason i think we can´t do a lot about it?

I think you just didn't have things installed correctly for some reason:

sudo apt-get install linux-generic nvidia-glx

That should always keep you up-to-date.
