Bug Description

Sometimes after changing resolution in gnome display gets all messed up either by showing fragments of former resolution or a blank screen. My setup support the resolution I change to because I can usually use them. This started happening after I added a second monitor for resolutions below including 1024x768. When this happens sometimes computer is unresponsive forcing me to power off to reboot or I'm able to ctrl+alt+FX to a console and reboot.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add your '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' file and your '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' file as attachments to your bug report? Additionally, with which version of Ubuntu did you notice this? Thanks in advance.

I'm using Ubuntu Feisty Fawn (with feisty-backports repository if that matters).

I presume you would like the log file to be posted being one just after I've managed to trigger this bug?

Brian Murray (brian-murray) wrote :

Yes, that would be ideal.

I changed from 1280x960 to 1024x768 the screen went blank and I waited out the change resolution timer to change it back to 1280x960, it tried to but the screen remained blank except for an artifact which appeared to the left under the center of my screen. So I CTRL+ALT+F2 to a terminal and captured the /var/log/Xorg.0.log which I've attached.

Please test using a Gutsy or Hardy LiveCD and see if it's still an issue.

I notice these lines, and wonder about the NULL's listed.

(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1024x768,1024x768"
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1280x960,NULL"
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1024x768,1024x768"
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1280x960,NULL"
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1024x768,1024x768"
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1280x960,NULL"
SetGrabKeysState - disabled
SetGrabKeysState - enabled
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1024x768,1024x768"
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1280x960,NULL"

Marking the xorg component invalid since this is likely to be an -nvidia issue.
