Incorrect .nvidia_new_installed prevents installation of older nvidia-glx packages

Bug Description

I can not install the Nvidia-GLX driver. ( Ubuntu 7.04 )
If i choose the Nvida driver, the X Server Stop with following message :

Code:

Error: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has the version 1.0-7184, but this X module has the version 1.0-9631

Check if this is not the same issue as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20/+bug/105928 - in which case the problem is solved if you install nvidia-glx-new. If someone finds a proper report on the issue of upgrades for people who have nvidia-glx installed, please link to it.

I found the answer :

delete: /lib/linux-restricted-modules/.nvidia_new_installed
and reinstall Nvida-glx

Philipp's solution worked for me too. It's really annoying that deleting an empty file solves the problem. I didn't have this problem with Mint.
