The same here with me, for instance
~$ glxgears
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual

Solved with the new version or with the following modification to the xorg.conf. Don't know which one since I do both at the same time :-(

Section "Extensions"
        Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

I had the same problem (Geforce 2 GTS and nvidia-glx-legacy) and it was the modification of xorg.conf, not the newest mesa-utils that seem to fix it.

Gabriel Bauman (gabrielbauman) wrote :

Explanation of problem:

Edgy enables the Xorg Composite extension by default. The legacy nvidia drivers require you to either explicitly allow GLX to run with Composite, or to disable Composite entirely.

Solutions:

1. Explicitly allow GLX while using the Composite, or disable Composite. If you do this, you should be sure to enable RenderAccel as well:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "NVIDIA Card"
        Driver "nvidia"
        BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
        Option "RenderAccel" "true"
        Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"
EndSection

Or,

2. Disable Composite. GLX will start working.

Section "Extensions"
        Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

I believe the newer nvidia drivers allow GLX with Composite by default, so this issue should really only affect legacy cards.

Since glxinfo should really not crash in this situation, I've attached my crash report as well.

It seems this is a problem with nvidia-glx-legacy only? Can this be fixed?
I believe this bug happens on fresh installs, not just upgrades, so it needs dealing with. It appears to be a problem with the released version of Edgy, and the latest as of 11 Nov 2006.

Changed in mesa-utils:
status: Unconfirmed → Confirmed

have a fresh install of edgy here and i can confirm the exact problem as mentioned above.

changing the device section as described above did fix the problem.

please see also https://bugs.launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.17/+bug/69680
as it related to the whole install process of nvidia-glx-legacy.
