Hello, I had a somewhat similar problem (Crash an logout and Ctrl-Alt+Fx).
Activating framebuffer solved the problem for me.

I added
vga=792 at the end of the kernel lines in /boot/grub/menu.lst

This is just a workaround, but better than nothing.
