This is very unlikely to be related specifically to Ubuntu. Moving up to Linux meta until we get more information.

I'm assuming you are using the proprietary nvidia modules. As such, the "blue" is likely caused by artifacts in the Xorg driver not cleaning up the video card's memory correctly.
If you are not using the proprietary nvidia drivers, then this belongs in xorg. The kernel doesn't handle Xorg leaving video in a bad state. |
