Bug Description

Hi Everyone,

Just after boot If I open gnome terminal the first keystroke (which one - arrow up, letter, number, etc) freezes DeskTop for about 5 seconds. Only first keystroke and only on first terminal section. If System Monitor is running before, it freezes for this time and then shows 1 core at 100%.

This issue happens on my Raspberry PI 4 8Gb, my everyday Desktop.

I'm running Ubuntu 21.10, but same happens on Ubuntu 21.04 Ubuntu 20.10 and Ubuntu 20.04

Same issue happens on my Notebook Dell 5558 (intel I5 (5. gen)) running Ubuntu 20.04 but it freezes for about 3 seconds.

You may think this a Debian legacy, but no, Raspberry PI OS does not show this behaviour.

I think this is a Ubuntu legacy cause POP-OS 21.04 running on my NoteBook has the same issue.

What makes you think that this is a (raspi) kernel issue? You seem to be running mutter, so what did you install and how?

Hi Juergh,

Sorry, I didn't notice launchpad choose Linux-raspi category.

As I said in description, I think this is a Ubuntu bug (and not a Debian legacy).

I've installed Ubuntu 21.10 on my Raspberry, and if neofetch said its runnning mutter Window Manager, it came from this installation. I didn't modified any WM.

BTW, last system update to kernel 5.13 broke my 21.10 installation, if you have a hint for me to recover it, I would appreciate. Now it prompts to initram screen.

Hi Norbert,

Which image did you install on the Pi? Server of Desktop? On an SD card or USB drive? Does the freeze happen after every reboot or only the very first time?

Regarding the broken update to 5.13: Please open a new bug report and provide the steps to reproduce the problem.

Hi Juergh,

This freezing happens just after any boot (or reboot), only once. All other windows (tasks) freezes for up to 5 seconds, even System Monitor freezes too. If I boot my desktop or notebook 5 times a day it will freeze 1 time per boot on each equipament, only the first terminal session.

You may think what a diference 5 seconds makes? But every day for years??? For me it is a bug, and if not, someone could explain me what happens. I very sure, if you use ubuntu, you can reproduce this issue.

As I said it happens on Ubuntu 20.04, 20.10, 21.04, 21.10 and Pop_OS 21.04. RPI4 and Intel Core I5.

Using Raspberry PI OS and Debian no issue.

On RPI4 I installed "impish-preinstalled-desktop-arm64+raspi.img.xz" from ubuntu daily build for 21.10 and same way for 21.04 and 20.10. Only 20.04 I've installed server and then desktop.

On RPI4 I use a USB SSD.

On Dell 5558 Notebook I installed Ubuntu 20.04.2 Desktop (64-bit) ISO. installed on a Sata SSD.

Thanks,

Issue Update.

Now desktop freeze is taking about 8:23 secs... After 14 days from first report and after a new install and updates... update...

As you can see on image attached System Monitor from 38 sec to 45 sec one core remains 100%.

And only Gnome Terminal an System Monitor are running on Desktop.

Has anybody seen this issue on any platform?

Thanks,

I am testing Ubuntu 22.04 and until now (03/15/2022) issue solved on RPI4.

Thanks anybody,
