Just upgraded to Karmic. Brightness keys work. I also don't observe "ACPI: Failed to switch the brightness" messages in kernel log.
I guess something in userland handled this in Karmic, since I was unable to have these keys work w/o that kernel patch in Jaunty.
I'd like to hear if someone has the explanation.
