Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-386

After upgrading to Intrepid and the linux-image-386 (version 2.6.25.2.3) kernel my USB WiFi dongle no longer works. It uses the rt73usb driver which requires a firmware file to be uploaded. The firmware is provided in the linux-firmware module (/lib/modules/rt73.bin) but the linux-image-386 package does not depend on it so there is no firmware installed for my device. The firmware used to be in the linux-ubuntu-modules package.

Other kernel pacakges do depend on the linux-firmware package (e.g. linux-image-server) but they don't suppot my processor.

Manually installing linux-firmware solved the problem for me (once I could find a long enough ethernet cable to allow me to download it).

This is possibly related to bug #283949.
