Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-restricted-modules-generic

I upgraded from Dapper to Edgy yesterday (I figured with the release being imminent, it should be fairly bug free). The upgrade went well, I was provided with -386 and -generic kernels as I hadn't got round to removing -386 from my old Dapper install.

The problem I now face is that my Atheros WiFi chipset only works with the new -386 kernel. If I boot into -generic, the ath_pci module can't be loaded either automatically or via modprobe.

I've done a fresh aptitude update/dist-upgrade today just in case there's a last minute fix for this, but there were no upgrades for anything kernel related.

I can confirm this and the dmesg output. This looks like a duplicate of 67601

I have a similar problem with a pcmcia wireless card (smc2635w) that works perfectly in Dapper but in Edgy show me a kernel panic even in the 386 kernel. Why the Edgy wireless support is worse than Dapper's one?

Now seems to be fixed after I received a "linux-restricted-modules-{generic|386}" upgrade on the 8th of November.

When I did a fresh install with Ubuntu Edgy for 64-bit machines, it didn't install the linux-restricted-modules package, so once I installed the linux-restricted-modules package, my atheros card was up and running. I have documented it here:
