I have a Medion 95264 Laptop (same as MSI S250) with an SIS 661MX chipset.
I have the same problem. Only weak sound from the jack, no speakers at all.

The solution should be this:
http://craig.copi.org/computers/ms-1013/

But right now I am using Ububtu 6.06 Beta and it still isn't working.
I thought that Ububtu 6.06 Beta allready used ALSA 1.0.10.
this file:
/proc/asound/card0/codec97#0/ac97#0-0+regs
seems empty in Ububtu 6.06 Beta
Hope this can be fixed before the final release.

Is this still a problem on Dapper and/or Edgy?

Yes, I have this problem in edgy beta. I had it working before in dapper.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 and lspci tells me this about my sound card:

00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)

When I boot a dapper live cd, the speakers works fine. I haven't tried the edgy beta live cd yet.

I have attached the output from amixer.

I'm sorry, but my "External Amplifier" switch was turned off. I'm not sure why though, I can't remember ever touching that setting.

Turning it on made sound work again.

thanks for showing interest in this bug.
It is still a problem in Dapper and Edgy knot3.
I've tried changing all the switches, but that makes no difference. Here
you can find some extra information:
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=49452

I did try using this command:
echo 7a 2090 > /proc/asound/card0/codec97#0/ac97#0-0+regs
but when I do it without root , I get an acces denied error.
And with sudo su I get:
bash: /proc/asound/card0/codec97#0/ac97#0-0+regs: No such device

I did not try to install a new version of alsa manually.

Hope you can solve this.

I have a Targa Traveller 826, which is built from the same barebone as the MSI Megabook M635. The problem reported by the original reporter was fixed in Dapper.

JoostWestra et al. You folks have seem to different hardware. Please check the output of "demidecode|less" in order to verify if you really have a laptop based on the MS-1029 barebone. If that's not the case, please file a separate report.

I'll mark this bug as "fixed" since the problem reported by the original reporter has been closed and I can verify that because I have the same hardware.
