Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-386

Intel has released the drivers for the 3945 and 4965 wireless cards at http://intellinuxwireless.org/?p=iwlwifi. We should create and test an Ubuntu package for this driver.

and when rebooting the system it hangs up, so I had to blacklist ipw4965.

*Not* using a custom kernel, but using the ubuntu kernel package 2.6.22-8.18 the system crashes
as soon as i connect to a network.

I can't see the komplete kernel-ooop message, since it panics inside the
interrupt handler and i don't knwo how to scroll or cut'n-paste that
panic message. Here's what I wrote down: (onto paper)

After patching the ubuntu-kernel with mac80211-9.0.2 from http://www.intellinuxwireless.org, rebuilding my own kernel image and building iwlwiki-0.1.5 agains that kernel everything works nice.

So, in respect to 4965, it seems time to update the kernel mac80211 subsystem...

Ok, It isn't the problem in the kernel, the problem was in nvidia-glx, I had to install linux-restriced-*, ubuntu-restricted-*,linux-headers-*and reinstall nvidia-glx.

I'm somewhat of newb when it comes to Linux. I apologize if I'm posting this in the wrong area.

I was pointed towards Ubuntu due to it's reputation in regards to support and the user community. I have yet to find a distribution that works with my wireless which is key for me (tried Mandriva, Suse, an older build of Ubuntu a few months ago), and I think the other was Red Hat, as I don't understand how to install the drivers manually at all. I've tried with 3 or 4 other distributions, but the instructions I find on the web never work. I also had no luck with ndiswrapper with any of the other builds. They always caused the OS to hard lock as soon as you tried to enable the wireless.

I downloaded the latest (I'm assuming it's the latest) Ubuntu 7.04 DVD (feisty?). Will the auto-update automatically download the module mentioned (linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-generetic) or is there something else I must do to get my 4965 working with Ubuntu? If it's an auto-thing, then I'm sold, as this is my only hold-out in switching to Linux. My internal wired Ethernet cards always work, but I don't want to be chained to a wire.

Thanks

do what I did, but don't install nvidia-glx if you are using another graphic card. And if you have some trouble ask again.

DJRumpy, at this time the current stable release of Ubuntu (7.04) does not support that wireless card natively. It may work via NDISwrapper on 7.04 but I am not sure. It is supported on the upcoming release that is being tested now which will be released officially in October. There are daily snapshots of 7.10 available however if you are truly new to Linux a testing release may not be a good idea and you should wait until it is stable in October. Have you tried asking on www.ubuntuforums.org to see if anyone there has a way to get it working on 7.04?

Hmm..turns out this isn't an option. I downloaded the ISO for 7.04 (x64 version) and attempted to install. I ended up with a black/blank screen. I then attempted the text only installer, which I could see, but after the install, I again ended up with a black screen. I then tried removing the "SPLASH" from th startup command after finding similar posts on the site. That got me past the black screen error, only to land me at anotehr error (A TTY JOB error). I tried using Cntrl-Alt-F1->F8 but they only gave me a non flashing cursor (F1 took me back to the error). I finally gave up in frustration and tried Mandriva. It installed without issue, but it also doesn't support this wireless card out of the box. I've attempted to follow the guides. I installed the source kernel (ended up picking way too many things that aren't a kernel source apparently) until the ls command shows the make command as suggsted by the Intel wifi guide. Those guides always ended up with some error, that apparently wasn't supposed to happen.

I was able to upgrade the kernel in Mandriva to 1.6.21.5 after much digging on Google. They don't seem to have the newest kernels available like Ubuntu does. I'd still like to give Ubuntu a go if I can get it booted up. Should I just try the 32 bit version? I'd prefer the 64 for my Core 2 duo but I could live with 32.

Core 2 Duo does not work as a 64 bit processor. It works as 2 32 bits
processors. You need to use the x86 32 bit version of Ubuntu.

That would be a shock to me since I also run Vista X64 on it ;)

Core 2 Duo is a 64 bit processor. Core Duo which you may be thinking of is 32 bit. I'm also able to install the 64bit version of Mandriva without issue.

The specific error I get is as follows (I get the same error with the 64 bit and 32 bit 7.04 disks)

[ 0.23202] PCI: Failed to allocate mem resources #:2000@e0000000 for 0000:01:00.0

That flashes on the screen, and then it pauses for 20 seconds or so. It then gives me this error:

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
(initramfs)_

The last bit is just the prompt it returns me to. I've tried pressing Conrol-Alt and (f1-f7) at that point but it just says Please Wait - Loading or somesuch and never does anything else. Pressing the Alt F1 returns me to the above error.

Core 2 Duo is 64 bit. It appears to be something specific to Ubuntu. The 64 bit flavors from other Distro's seem to run without issue. I'm replying from the 64 bit Mandriva distro as I type.
