I tried setting COGL_ATLAS_DEFAULT_BLIT_MODE to framebuffer and performance seems to become poorer and I start having glitches when changing workspaces (in Awesome window manager). Not sure if that's a satisfactory workaround.

Interestingly there are reports for similar issues dating back to 14.04 but I never had this problem until now with 16.04.
