A similar system (not minimized, so running 4.13) appears to work correctly (eth0 is found and renamed to ens3, and the system gets to a getty and has network).

I've asked kamal to prepare a linux-kvm package with the e1000 driver added to do some more testing, in case it does manage to start with e1000 but not virtio-net.

Changed in linux-kvm (Ubuntu):

status: New → In Progress

I think this is simply because in Openstack, cloud-init-generator (well, ds-identify from cloud-init) looks at dmi, doesn't find the make/model data there since there isn't (because no CONFIG_DMI), and gives up doing anything else.

Please enable CONFIG_DMI on the linux-kvm kernel.

Mathieu has confirmed that a test kernel with CONFIG_DMI and CONFIG_DMIID enabled resolves the problem.

This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel in -proposed solves the problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-xenial' to 'verification-done-xenial'. If the problem still exists, change the tag 'verification-needed-xenial' to 'verification-failed-xenial'.

If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!

Verification-done-xenial, with 4.4.0-1010.15:

I spun an openstack instance with a newly-built image built to include the kernel package from proposed; the system boots correctly and is reachable from the network, as shown in the attached log.
