Bug Description

As discussed in this thread: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/8601#note_2092811

On my laptop, HP Zbook Power 15 G9 (i7-12800H), HDMI is not detected.

According to the discussion a fix has been implemented in kernel v6.6-rc1.

If it's possible for Ubuntu to implement some fix in the current LTS version that would be MUCH helpful and appreciated for me and all other ubuntu users on the same laptop.

Usually external monitor ports are wired to the discrete GPU. So that would make it an Nvidia problem, not an Intel kernel problem...

Please run:

  grep . /sys/class/drm/*/status > connections.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

Command

That's correct, it silently produces a text file. Please attach that text file here.

It looks like the Intel GPU exists but is disabled. And that both the laptop screen and the external monitor are wired to the Nvidia GPU... unless you have more than one external monitor attached?

No just one external monitor attached.

In that case this sounds like a bug in Xorg/Nvidia/Mutter, but not the kernel because the Intel GPU is not being used.

Please connect the monitor and then run:

  journalctl -b0 > journal.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

affects: linux-hwe-6.2 (Ubuntu) → nvidia-graphics-drivers-535 (Ubuntu)

Here is the resulting file. Note that I am at home now so it's a different monitor.

Thanks. I don't see any obvious errors but Xorg seems to be detecting and logging about the external monitor a little too often. This might be caused by:

 * A bad monitor cable connection; or
 * The unused evdi (DisplayLink) driver emitting events to the kernel.

So I recommend trying:

 * A new monitor cable; and
 * Disconnecting the DisplayLink adapter (dock?) or blacklisting it by creating a new file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-evdi.conf containing:

   blacklist evdi

Well the obvious error should be that the HDMI output is not even detected. Running command xrandr the HDMI output does not show up. And plugging in a display in the HDMI port it is not detected.

I should also mention that trying out the same display, but on my windows partition works fine without any problems.

Daniel van Vugt (vanvugt) wrote :

All of the files provided so far suggest that HDMI *is* detected by the kernel and by Xorg. It's just labelled as a DisplayPort "DP-1" internally. That is normal... But having no image on screen might be mutter failing to interpret the Xrandr information provided by Xorg. Or it might be a historical config that has disabled the display for some reason.

Can you provide a current copy of ~/.config/monitors.xml ?

Hi! I have same machine and problem.
When a plug hdmi cable, monitors.xml looks like:

<monitors version="2">
  <configuration>
    <logicalmonitor>
      <x>0</x>
      <y>0</y>
      <scale>1</scale>
      <primary>yes</primary>

          <serial>0x00000000</serial>
        </monitorspec>

Here is the ~/.config/monitors.xml file, it's run while hdmi cable is plugged in (and not detected as usual).

Also, about your earlier comment. It makes no difference if the dock is plugged in the usb-c connection or not. The hdmi is not detected anyway. I just tried this 5 seconds ago.
