Bug Description

After installing Ubuntu 20.04 on my laptop, if the laptop suspends due to closing the lid or not using the laptop for some time and once I press any key to resume from the suspend, the laptop shows a blank screen and is unresponsive to any button presses.

This problem happens sometimes though. There have been times that I resume from suspend successfully. But more often it will fail to resume from suspend completely and I will need to use the hardware power button to hard shutdown and restart.

Thanks for the bug report. The final entry in your kernel log shows that the Intel GPU tried and failed to update the screen:

[ 1216.206745] i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A (start=73567 end=73568) time 940 us, min 1073, max 1079, scanline start 1033, end 1097

So maybe that's the issue...

Please try (separately):

1. Selecting 'Ubuntu on Wayland' on the login screen just before logging in.

2. Edit /etc/environment and add a line:

   MUTTER_DEBUG_ENABLE_ATOMIC_KMS=0

   Then reboot and select 'Ubuntu on Wayland' again.

I thought this problem had solved itself somehow since I could resume from suspend but around 2 weeks ago, the problem resurfaced again.

About your solutions:
Here's the thing, I can't see the login screen post resume. The whole screen is blank. There's no way to send an input to the computer (e.g., CAPS Lock button doesn't work, else that capslock light would blink when the button is pressed).

So there's no way to select "Ubuntu on Wayland" on the login screen. Sorry!

More info:
In Softwares and Updates > Additional Drivers, I can see that my system is using "NVIDIA driver metapackage from nvidia-driver-470 (proprietary, tested)" for my NVIDIA GeForce MX130. But when I try to open NVIDIA XServer settings, it shows a small window with nothing in it. Maybe the driver isn't working properly (which is why I am getting a decent battery life ;P)? Something to do with Secure Boot and MOK?
