Bug Description

I have been trying to netboot from the daily precise images. I've noticed for build 2011-12-05 alternate i386 one of the test systems, (Dell Vostro 3400) fails the first time it tries to detect network hardware.

I can select Continue, and proceed to the Ubuntu Archive selection to manually use my local image mirror.

This also happens when booting from usb.

This is causing preseed installations to halt as well.

This needs to be fixed by adding the necessary firmware file to the nic-firmware udeb. Reassigning to linux-firmware.

The symptoms are identical to 842560, so I'm marking this as a duplicate. Note that the firmware fails to load right as udev is transitioning from initrd to rootfs.

Steve Langasek (vorlon) wrote :

This is definitely not the same bug. The firmware in question is *not included* in the nic-firmware udeb.

Bug #842560 is strictly about failures to load firmware due to a race when killing udev in the initramfs. The d-i netboot doesn't do this at all, and the firmware is not there to load in the first place.

Attached is the fix for linux-firmware for this issue, which I'll be uploading to precise shortly. Tim, could you pull this into the git repo for me?
