ipw2200 firmware moved to restricted

Bug #279669 reported by Chris Jones on 2008-10-07
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
Release Notes for Ubuntu
linux-firmware (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

In Hardy, the firmware for ipw2200 wireless cards was in linux-ubuntu-modules (i.e. in main).
In Intrepid, the firmware is in linux-restricted-modules-common (i.e. in restricted).

Users who do not have restricted enabled, or don't have l-r-m-common will find themselves lacking wireless when they upgrade.

Was the firmware incorrectly included in main in the first place?

Chris Jones (cmsj) wrote :

The licence for this firmware is http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/firmware.php?fid=7 which appears to grant redistribution (IANAL, LOL, BBQ)

bug 269926 touches on the same issue but for iwlwifi .

Changed in linux:
assignee: nobody → ubuntu-kernel-team
importance: Undecided → Medium
status: New → Triaged

Are you sure that this is "medium" importance? Since I rely on Wireless for connection, this breaks my OS on upgrade to Intrepid...

Nick Moffitt (nick-moffitt) wrote :

The license grants redistribution, sure (otherwise it wouldn't be redistributed by Ubuntu!), but it forbids disassembly just for starters...

Colin Watson (cjwatson) wrote :

Note that the Ubuntu Licensing Policy states that we will consider firmware in main on a case-by-case basis.

Ben, this was resolved with the linux-firmware package correct?

Changed in linux:
assignee: ubuntu-kernel-team → ben-collins

This no longer needs a release notes item since the firmware is staying in main.

Changed in ubuntu-release-notes:
status: New → Invalid
