Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-firmware-nonfree

This is more a request for support of a new device, than an actual bug:

Inserting a Siano-based DVB-T stick (e.g. Hauppauge Win-TV Aero) causes these messages in /var/log/messages:

[595404.200647] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
[595404.351596] usb 1-3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[595404.399232] usb 1-3: firmware: requesting sms1xxx-hcw-55xxx-dvbt-02.fw
[595404.421405] smscore_set_device_mode: error -2 loading firmware: sms1xxx-hcw-55xxx-dvbt-02.fw, trying again with default firmware
[595404.421409] usb 1-3: firmware: requesting dvb_nova_12mhz_b0.inp
[595404.423143] smscore_set_device_mode: error -2 loading firmware: dvb_nova_12mhz_b0.inp
[595404.424364] sms_ir_exit:
[595404.442825] smsusb: probe of 1-3:1.0 failed with error -2
[595404.442850] usbcore: registered new interface driver smsusb
[596168.067869] usb 1-3: USB disconnect, address 8

This posting on Ubuntuforums.org shows how support for this type of DVB-T device can be added using firmware from Hauppauge:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9954005&postcount=10

The solution was verified to work with a Hauppauge Win-TV Aero DVB-T stick:

[597359.571505] smsusb: probe of 1-3:1.0 failed with error -2
[597397.384666] usb 1-3: USB disconnect, address 10
[597406.470649] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 11
[597406.621636] usb 1-3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[597406.622917] usb 1-3: firmware: requesting sms1xxx-hcw-55xxx-dvbt-02.fw
[597407.180652] smscore_set_device_mode: firmware download success: sms1xxx-hcw-55xxx-dvbt-02.fw
[597407.183915] DVB: registering new adapter (Hauppauge WinTV MiniStick)
[597407.184057] DVB: registering adapter 0 frontend 0 (Siano Mobile Digital MDTV Receiver)...

If the firmware is added (with the name sms1xxx-hcw-55xxx-dvbt-02.fw) to the linux-firmware-nonfree package,
then this type of device would be supported automatically.

Thanks.

For which release is this required? Should be fixed in Maverick with linux-firmware-nonfree 1.9
