Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-firmware

Ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-11-generic i686

DVB-T receiver "MSI Digi VOX mini III" doesn't work in Ubuntu 9.04. I think when I installed Ubuntu 9.04 it was working but now it is not working, I see errors in the log files. I thought that device is dead but I checked under WinXP that it is healthy.

First, firmware is installed:

# ls -l /lib/firmware/dvb-usb-af9015.fw
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12700 2009-04-02 23:46 /lib/firmware/dvb-usb-af9015.fw

# uname -a
Linux box 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:57:59 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

Same device here, also I2C errors on default 9.04 x64 install.

Updating firmware file to version 4.95 from http://www.otit.fi/~crope/v4l-dvb/af9015/af9015_firmware_cutter/firmware_files/4.95.0/ and compiling fresh v4l-dvb drivers from http://www.linuxtv.org/repo/ fixed the issue.

Confirming this.

The distributed firmware currently at /lib/firmware/dvb-usb-af9015.fw is an old buggy version.

[ 12.559817] dvb-usb: downloading firmware from file 'dvb-usb-af9015.fw'
[ 13.327234] af9013: firmware version:4.65.0
[ 14.083895] af9013: firmware version:4.65.0

This version is known to not work at all with some dual tuner af9013 devices, and the current firmware used for these devices is version 4.95.0.

To fix, the new firmware has to be installed. The device must be removed from usb, ideally plugged into another computer to have it's firmware purged, and then replugged. If the device is detected in a 'warm state' the new firmware will not be loaded, and you'll need unplug it again, and try leaving it disconnected for a longish time.

Attached is the new version of the firmware, which should replace the one currently in the ubuntu package.
