Made PPA with 3.7:

Updating to 3.7 in trusty probably is not possible. There are some essential backported packages.

I am wondering why do I see 3.6.1 in vivid while the latest version appears to be 3.8 which is possibly related to this issue.

Version in Ubuntu repository updated very slow.

Use PPA if you need latest Linphone:

Thanks, I found the PPA already.

I probably wouldn't need the latest version otherwise, but it's in Arch and it appears that with LAN-.calls the latest version and Ubuntu version are incompatible as calls don't go through and neither do IMs. When I upgraded from that PPA, everything worked.

In the meantime, 3.9.1 has been released (on November 16th, 2015).

As a side note, "Fix committed" for the Debian bug is quite misleading (even if it might technically be correct) - Debian unstable still contains 3.6.1 as far as I can tell.

Maybe the package should be dropped from repository if there's no one to maintain it, as there is a potential for security issues as it is a networked app.

The PPA contains 3.9.1, the current version is 4.1.1.

Is there a chance it will find its way into the repository? What is the problem – no maintainer, security issues, dependencies?

Oliver, it's being worked on. See the Debian bug that is linked. Right now, it's waiting for mediastreamer2 to be accepted from the Debian NEW queue.

version 3.12 was released to Debian in the middle of February, so the c-release of Ubuntu should have this bug fixed.

Rolf, it was released to Debian experimental. Do you want to ask the maintainer why it's not in Debian unstable yet?
