Bug Description

Fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10. Local user audio is available. Logging in as domain user with likewise, audio is not accessible. Even after adding domian user to audio, admin etc local groups. The hardware doesn't show under audio and is not avaible on desktop or audio apps. Although it is accessible under Skype.

I'm having exactly the same problem. I've reinstalled Ubuntu 11.10 a few times now and local user's audio works fine. When I login with a domain user the audio hardware isn't listed under "Sound settings". I can't change volume or anything and normal system sounds don't work. Strange thing is that I can hear web videos and skype calls.

Same issue for me.
Using 12.04beta with Likewise (beyond trust).

Could it be, that the Likewise users are not in the audio Group?
Can we instead of fixing the Likewise-problem just set the
audio system to allow all users instead of only users with audio group?

Ok it would be a workaround and no solution, but it would help for a while..

Is there any news on this ? It is quite annoying for some of us that have to deal with the presence of an AD server. I heard somebody confirming that it was OK for him sinci U/G to 12.04 but I would like to keep my float of notebooks on 11.10 for the time being and maybe go to 12.10 later this year. Roland's proposed workaround sounds acceptable to me.

Got the same problem here with 12.04.1 64 bits. This is really annoying...

I really think that the integration with AD from MS is really important to make Ubuntu enter on some professional and government networks... In my country we are trying to do this but likewise-open and even centrify express are not up for that...

On 12.04.1 likewise-open was for me not even usable because it wont copy skel when a domain user logins and where we need to implement PAM mout we couldn't because it also wont work...

For sometime now we are using centrify because it haves less bugs and works ok with skel and pam mount... on the other side its a bit more tricky to implement and lately and for some reason makes network a bit unstable on the client machine.

I started again to investigate likewise-open because we are in the beginning of an implementation on a school with more that 200 desktop using windows connected to AD. We really wont to convert this desktops to ubuntu 12.04, but we only have this chance if we can prove that ubuntu works ok on a AD environment...

Likewise now works with skel and PAM mount but now the domain users dont have sound...

Fedora 18 is implementing ad authentication out of the box and maybe this is not necessary to ubuntu but ubuntu users deserve a better ad integration if the community wants to give us a chance to make ubuntu a real alternative to proprietary os's on a AD network...

Sory for my long test and i know that this is not really a correct bug report but i was in the need to let all know how i feel about this really annoying situation...

Ok i spoke a little to soon and iḿ really sory about that...

Today i have done alot of testing on this situation and i figured out that the audio problem in my case only happens when the domain user home directory is on a NFS export.

If the same user has the home directory on the default location for likewise "/home/likewise-open/DOMAIN/username" the sound works as expected. But if the user has is home directory on "same location" but if that location is on a nfs server everything works ok but not the sound...

I tried fixed mount on /etc/fstab and also autofs but the problem is the same...

I really can't figured out if the problem is with likewise, nfs or both working together...

Sory once more for the wrong bug report...

I know this is an older thread, but I found a solution to problem of using audio with home dir mounted from network.

I assume you use pam_mount to automatically mount users home directories. It uses mount.cifs program to mount the specified volumes. The problem is, that the remote filesystem, where you homedir is placed does not support UGO. cifs.mount gives all the folders and files same user rights (for me on Ubuntu 13.04 its 755).

Pulse audio needs to create a secured folder (~/.config/pulse) with rights set to 700. Fortunatelly you can use cifs.mount parameters file_mode and dirmode.

So when you edit your /etc/security/pam_mount.conf.xml like this:

<!-- mount home dir -->
<volume user="*" fstype="cifs" server="YourServerName" path="NetworkPathToYourHomedir" mountpoint="~/" />
<!-- mount pulseaudio -->
<volume user="*" fstype="cifs" server="YourServerName" path="NetworkPathToYourHomedir/.config/pulse" mountpoint="~/.config/pulse" options="file_mode=0600, dir_mode="0700" />

After you log out and back in, you will have your homedir mounted with working pulseaudio.
