Bug Description

Until ubuntu 11.10, when I closed the lid in lightdm the computer suspended.

In Ubuntu 12.04, this behavior stopped to work while at the login screen (lightdm). When logged in on Unity or Gnome, closing the lid suspends normally as expected.

I think that this is a bug, since all configurations panels, and configurations files I found out, was saying that when closing the lid, the computer will suspend.

I've changed from lightdm to gdm using dpkg-reconfigure gdm and with gdm when closing the lid the computer suspend normally as expected.

But I really prefer lightdm, and I would like to make this work as worked in lightdm on Ubuntu 11.10.

thanks!

I see this on 12.10. My wife and I use XFCE sessions and closing the lid with either session active suspends OK, even if the other person is logged in too.

If lightdm is on screen (i.e. one of us logged out or selected "switch user") when the lid is closed the laptop stays powered on.

This is still a problem on 13.04 with lightdm 1.6.0. I also am using xfce.

This issue appears not just at the lightdm login screen but also if you are in a virtual terminal.

For a work around try the recommendation on this site:
http://www.infty.nl/wordpress/2012/12/gnome-3-on-ubuntu-raring-and-suspend/comment-page-1/

Similar instructions are here but without the explanation:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/71033/closing-the-lid-isnt-toggeling-standby-anymore-after-update-in-lubuntu-how-can

I named the created file lid.sh.pre not lid.sh.post as /etc/acpi/lid.sh already references lid.sh.post. Don't forget to make the file executable (like I usually do) as instruscted on that page.

I experience the same problem. When someone closes my laptop lid, when no-one is logged in, the laptop keeps running and gets seriously hot like a toaster oven. It is bound to fry one day. Please increase the priority of this issue.

I'm running:
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS
Release: 12.04
Codename: precise

What greeter are reporters on this bug running? LightDM doesn't control suspend / the screen. The greeters do that.
