Bug Description

Hi all,

     I am using xubuntu 11.10 with lightdm and lightdm-gtk-greeter as
     dm/greeter. After logging in the system through lightdm-gtk-greeter,
     there is no utmp/wtmp information recorded, i.e. if I use 'who' or 'w'
     command to check who is logging in. I could not find any record for
     the current user. For my system, I could not successfully start lightdm
     with unity-greeter, so don't check this issue with unity-greeter.

     It works well with gdm + lightdm-gtk-greeter. (The login user will reveal
     in who/w/last command through tty7/tty8).

     Cheers,
     Mike

I can confirm this. If I ssh into a VM and run 'w', I see my ssh session:
$ w
 11:14:24 up 1 min, 1 user, load average: 0.34, 0.14, 0.05
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
jamie pts/0 luna.local 11:14 0.00s 0.33s 0.00s w

If I then log into the VM's desktop with lightdm (still logged in via ssh) and run 'w', I see:
$ w
 11:15:35 up 2 min, 1 user, load average: 0.37, 0.20, 0.08
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
jamie pts/0 luna.local 11:14 0.00s 0.34s 0.00s w

Ie, the output of 'w' only shows my ssh login.

If I then install gdm, stop lightdm and start gdm and log in via it, typing 'w' in my ssh login shows:
$ w
 11:15:45 up 3 min, 2 users, load average: 1.27, 0.40, 0.14
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
jamie pts/0 luna.local 11:14 0.00s 0.34s 0.00s w
jamie tty7 :0 11:15 3:05 2.09s 0.09s gnome-session -

The gdm login is correctly displayed in 'w' output.
