Bug Description
Until yesterday I was using 11.04. Unity worked fine with GDM. Then I installed 11.10.
After boot, lightdm puts up the greeter OK. If I select "Ubuntu-2D" (Unity 2D) from the login box, then after a 30-second wait I have a usable Unity desktop. However, the network indicator falsely states that networking is disabled. If I log out, lightdm freezes (I get the text-mode screen with "checking battery state" etc). When I examine the process list, it seems that there are two lightdm processes, one of which is preventing the other from restarting. If I kill them, lightdm restarts.
If I try to log in using Unity-3D, however, there is a long wait before the desktop appears. I get no launcher bar on the left - not even when I press the "windows" key. Nor does the rightmost logout widget appear on the top bar. I have a similar problem on logout - no greeter appears and I'm left in an unresponsive text mode screen.
If I kill all the lightdm processes and start gdm, everything is fine. I can start Unity-3D and indeed any other desktop with no problems. And it's much, much quicker.

I have something similar here.
My lightdm is configured to autologin to an xbmc-standalone session. When I exit xbmc I expect to end up at the lightdm greeter, instead i get a black screen and the cross shaped mouse pointer.
Looking i the process list I see two lightdm processes, if i kill the younger one (higher pid) lightdm wakes up and gives me the greeter. If I kill the older one both processes dies and I have to run 'sudo start lightdm' which launches lightdm which in turn launches the xbmc session.
