setting nopasswdlogin removes user password

Bug #878997 reported by Vladimir on 2011-10-20

accountsservice (Ubuntu)
gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu)
lightdm (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

When user wants to setup login without password, user adds to nopasswdlogin group (it is fine), but actual password is removed as well. This makes impossible using the sudo or gksudo command if user was in adm group.

Workaround is booting in recovery mode and manual setting password to the user.

Thank you for your bug report, is that specific to lightdm or is gdm having the same issue?

Thank you for responce. I've just checked - situation with gdm is exactly the same...

Robet says that's it's rather a pam issue if gdm has the same bug

affects: lightdm (Ubuntu) → pam (Ubuntu)

I don't know which package this is, but it's *not* pam. The user is reporting that the password entry is being removed, and this is not something that the pam package does.

Reassigning to lightdm, but I don't know where this 'nopasswdlogin' group setup is being done.

affects: pam (Ubuntu) → lightdm (Ubuntu)

I'm pretty sure this is a bug in gnome-control-center. I'm pretty sure that is where most users configure the 'nopasswdlogin' membership (via the 'Login without a password' setting under 'User Management')
