Bug Description

Using Gnome (3?) in 11.10, I choose Switch User from my name in the top right. Screen fades to black, except for my name and the time. Nothing happens. I press spacebar, and get a chance to log back in. So... it's behaving has a screen lock; not an opportunity to switch users.

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

This may also be related:

After locking the screen, when you attempt to unlock the screen, the button for "switch user" is missing. Only options presented to the user are "Cancel" button and enter the password for the current user.

One more note. For me, selecting "switch user" from the user menu on the top right turns the screen black and appears as if its a lock screen (as noted by the OP). But moving the mouse or hitting the keyboard returns me immediately to my session without requiring a password.

According to this forum thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11301917#post11301917

This issue only occurs when using LightDM. When using GDM, switch user functions as expected.

affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) → lightdm (Ubuntu)

From what I can tell it's probably an artifact from upgrading. The non admin user account is actually still trying to call GDM to switch user, and GDM isn't available.

I can successfully from my main user to the other user, but not from the other user to the main user which is the one that ran the upgrade.

I can't confirm this. I use the Guest account to log in under a "Gnome" session (not Ubuntu).
From there, choosing to "Switch user" gives the same behaviour as above, though without the need for a password since Guest has none. That is, the screen goes blank except for a top bar, and nothing more happens. Pressing a key returns to the desktop of Guest.

Thank you for your bug report, could you add your ~/.xsession-errors and /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log to the bug?

What is your username, what entry do you pick in the menu? The .xsession-errors is from your user or the one you try to switch to? It seems from the log that it tries to start a gnome-shell session for the user "cpbl"

Mea culpa. Those logs demonstrate a different bug (I've got too many?) with darkening screen.
After the latest update, when I choose switch user, the screen darkens but now moves on to the login screen as it should. It lands me there ready for the password of the original user, but without logging me out. ie behaviour is okay.

Can someone else still reproduce this bug? And provide logs as requested by Sebastien?

Hi,

My behavior:
Login as user1, switch user to user 2: Fade to black. Screen goes to sleep. Ctrl+alt+f7 gets me user1's lockscreen.
