Bug Description

For a long time sometimes my desktop freezes suddenly and it took me a long time to find when. It turns out sometimes the desktop freezes when I move a window fast from one desktop to another, normally I would move it to the right.

OS is Ubuntu 18.04 and the issue occurs (as far as I remember) with the Open Source drivers and the AMD drivers. When using some default setting/driver the issue does not occur, but then screen updates are very slow.

I am using an MSI H81M-P33 motherboard, processor i5-4460, AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series (according to AMD driver). Monitor is AOC 1920x1080.

I tried many things, like different kernal versions and different drivers. The currently installed AMD drivers don't work with the 5.3 kernel. I did not recently use something like kernel 5.0, so I don't know if the issue is solved in later kernels.

I found some similar reports, but they all or mostly seem to relate to laptops. While writing this report my desktop crashed again and I was not moving a window, but just resizing it from the top down.

I can access the system through ssh and just changed the drivers from AMD pro to AMD open source. Not sure what the effect is. More details available if needed.

I would appreciate this would be solved, as it is pretty annoying to restart my computer several times a day and sometimes losing work.

The AMD Open Source driver has the same problem, may even be worse. Also sometimes when rebooting through ssh the computer is locking up, so I have to hard reset it.

I removed all the AMD driver stuff and went back to the default 18.04 kernel and the original X.Org drivers and that seems to have solved the problem.

Still strange that the AMD drivers would be that buggy, although maybe mixing all kinds of libraries, kernels, etc. may have worsened the problem, looking back.

More log available. The problem seems to occur when 'something else' goes wrong, like some network error.
